Developer posts iBooks for Mac video tour

By , Aug 7, 2013

iBooks for OS X Mavericks (iBookstore, Featured)
The fifth beta of the upcoming OS X Mavericks was released today, bringing with it for the first time the iBooks for Mac app.
Showcased during June’s WWDC keynote, iBooks for Mac brings the iOS reading experience to the Mac, down to turning pages with a swipe, zooming in on images with a pinch and scrolling from cover to cover. One developer took to YouTube to share his experience with iBooks for Mac beta, the video is right after the break…
Developer Nick Pomes posted a video tour (via 9to5Mac) to YouTube showcasing the reading experience in iBooks for Mac.
He takes us through downloading a free book from the iBookstore and demos the various tools, like search, highlighting, bookmarks and more.
Have a look below.
Needles to say, all your books downloaded through the built-in iBookstore (see the image top of post) automatically appear in iBooks for Mac and iOS. Speaking of the iBookstore in iBooks for Mac, you can browse free or paid books by title, author or genre, check out reviews, click to see details or read a free sample.
Other features included in iBooks for Mac: Collections, support for importing your own PDFs via drag and drop and a Purchased section to filter only the reading material obtained from Apple.
Strangely enough, PDFs open in the Preview app.
If Apple is reading this, I sure as hell hope they’ll implement iCloud sync for PDFs because I want to be able to import my own books once and have them automatically pushed to all of my authorized devices.
iBooks for OS X Mavericks (Multiple books)
By the way, iBooks – along with other Apple apps on the App Store that are not part of the stock iOS experience – is yet to be updated with the flattened iOS 7 look and feel. I also love how the Mac edition steers away from the wooden bookshelf design seen in its oft-criticized iOS counterpart.
According to Apple, iBooks for Mac brings feature-parity with its iOS counterpart.
iBooks for OS X Mavericks (Collections)
In addition to page turning by swiping and pinch-zooming, iBooks for Mac takes advantage of your screen real estate by letting you keep as many books open as you like, which is useful for students who need to reference and research multiple textbooks simultaneously.
The Notes pane seen on the below screenshot collects all your notes, highlights and thoughts in the lefthand column.
iBooks for OS X Mavericks (Textbooks 001)
“When you quote an excerpt while writing a paper, iBooks adds a citation for you,” Apple says in a press release“And when you take notes, highlight passages, or add a bookmark on your Mac, iCloud pushes them to all your devices automatically”.
Of course, iCloud also keeps your progress synced across devices so you’ll be able to start reading a book on your iOS device and continue right where you left off on a Mac, and vice versa. And by enabling automatic downloads, buying a book on your iOS device  will automatically push it to all your Macs via iCloud.
By last count, the iBookstore had over 1.8 million free and paid books, from textbooks and classics to the latest bestsellers.

Microsoft lures iCloud users with 15GB free SkyDrive storage upgrade

    By , Aug 7, 2013

SkyDrive Pro 1.0 for iOS (iPhone screenshot 001)SkyDrive Pro 1.0 for iOS (iPhone screenshot 003)
Oh Microsoft, you’re so cunning. Taking advantage of the impending iCloud storage downgrade, the Windows maker has tweeted out a tempting offer meant to promote its SkyDrive cloud storage service whilst luring customers away from Apple’s iCloud.
If you are a former MobileMe member and have received an email from Appleannouncing your complimentary iCloud storage is expiring soon, just forward it toHelpMeSkyDrive@outlook.com to claim your fifteen gigabytes of SkyDrive storage, free for a year.
You should take advantage of the promo because Microsoft otherwise sells an additional twenty gigabytes of SkyDrive storage for ten bucks a year so that’s nearly ten bucks saved right off the bat…
    Here’s Microsoft’s tweet.
The wording could have been better, by the way: MobileMe retired years ago. I bet you wish Apple downgraded you or that you didn’t delete the downgrade email.
So I went and did just that.  Within half an hour, Microsoft emailed me a code to activate my additional 15GB of free SkyDrive storage here. Just click Manage Storage on the bottom left and enter your code.
Some fine print: Voucher valid for an extra 15 GB of free SkyDrive storage for one year. Voucher must be redeemed by May 31, 2014. 15 GB storage expires one year from voucher redemption. Limit: One voucher per person. Single use only. The voucher is non-transferable.
Former MobileMe members who moved to iCloud have received a 20GB complimentary storage upgrade from Apple, now scheduled to expire on September 30, 2013.
“When it expires, your iCloud storage will be automatically adjusted to the free 5 GB plan,” Apple warns. This means your iCloud Backup, Documents in the Cloud and iCloud Mail may temporarily stop working should you exceed your iCloud storage plan after the September 30 cut-off date.
In case you’re wondering, paid SkyDrive storage upgrades are available in 20/50/100GB increments priced at $10/$25/$50 a year.
    SkyDrive storage plans
By comparison, Apple will sell you iCloud storage upgrades in 10/20/50GB buckets for $20/$40/$100 a year. This means you’ll soon have to decide whether to drop $40 a year on a 20GB iCloud storage upgrade or bring your data usage down by around fifteen gigabytes.
Unlike SkyDrive, you can’t use the iCloud web interface to freely upload files and share them with anyone. Instead, your iCloud allowance counts against email messages, iOS device backups, app data and documents, Camera roll backups and more.
A free iCloud account comes with five gigabytes of storage versus seven gigabytes of free storage for new SkyDrive users and, for one year, an additional three gigabytes of free storage to students. Better yet, people who signed up to SkyDrive prior to April 22, 2012 could have opted-in for a limited time offer of 25GB of free storage upgrade.
Microsoft has recently updated the SkyDrive iOS client with full-resolution photos, offline access and improved support for the iPhone 5 and iPad mini devices. In addition, the Redmond giant recently released a brand new SkyDrive Pro iOS app for Office 35 subscribers.

Apple's iPhone 4 Experiences 10% Increase in Resale Value Since April

According to a new survey, the resale value of the iPhone 4 in the U.S. has actually grown by more than 10% since April, while the value of Samsung’s smartphone lineup can’t command the same used prices as Apple. Investment firm Piper Jaffray has been monitoring online auctions for popular Apple and Samsung smartphones since mid-march with a value being assigned to the last 50 phones sold. Their data found that Apple’s three year old iPhone 4 gained 10.31% in resale value on eBay, the iPhone 4S dropped by 11.85%, while the iPhone 5 slid just 3.75%. During the same span, eBay prices of Samsung’s Galaxy S III 27.32% while the Galaxy Note II was off 35.54%.

Piper Jaffray’s team also tracks the resale values of smartphones on the bidding site Taobao in China. There, the iPhone 4 also grew in value since April by 1.42% while the iPhone 4 was off 14.32% and the iPhone 5 fell 7.22%. In China, Samsung’s smartphones also failed to hold the same resale value as Apple’s. The Galaxy S III was down 24.17%, the Galaxy Note II fell 23.67% and the company’s latest flagshipGalaxy S4 lost 14.39% of its resale value. Munster continued by stating the fact that the iPhone 5 is holding its value better than the Galaxy S4 in China suggests that there is continuing support for Apple’s flagship device. He sees this as important with Apple “maintaining mindshare in the high-end market.”

Munster is also encouraged by the fact that the iPhone 5 isn’t rapidly declining in price, which could signal that customers are either waiting for a new model, or leaning toward Samsung’s Galaxy lineup. The results seem to be consistent with what Piper Jaffray found when it published the results of its first smartphone resale value index back in May. Apple CEO Tim Cook even commented on the strong resale value of iPhones during his company’s most recent quarterly earnings conference call. It’s currently rumored that Apple may join existing cash-paying-trade-in services by taking trade-ins on used iPhones at Apple’s retail stores. Cook said the following regarding the topic:

Samsung Files for "Galaxy Gear" Smart Watch Trademark

Samsung’s upcoming smart watch accessory may be dubbed the “Galaxy Gear,” based on a recently filed trademark by the company in its home country of South Korea as well as in the U.S. The trademark applications apply to an Internet-connected smart watch according to the Associated Press. One application for the “Samsung Galaxy Gear” was made with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on July 29, while another was filed a month earlier for the “Samsung Gear” in South Korea.

The designs for the upcoming device(s) are unknown but the USPTO application did describe the device to be a wristwatch, wrist band, or bangle. It also mentioned the device will be capable of connecting to the Internet, make phone calls, and check email and text message.

The South Korean tech giant’s trademark applications come after Apple, who has already filed for its own “iWatch” trademarks in Japan, Mexico, Taiwan, and elsewhere around the globe. Despite the filings, Apple isn’t expected to introduce its own smart watch accessory until late 2014, with a focus on biometrics data such as heart rate monitoring.
Samsung previously revealed in March that it was readying its own smart watch accessory, though the company didn’t provide any details. The new device would actually be Samsung’s third stab at creating a wrist-worn device with two previous devices representing full-fledged phones worn on the wrist. The SPH-WP10 was released in 1999, while the S9110 Watch Phone debuted in 2009.

The Galaxy tag in Samsung’s forthcoming watch will fit in with the company’s family of mobile devices that run Google’s Android operating system. This includes the flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone, Galaxy Tab line of tablets, and a range of other devices. With Apple and Samsung said to be working on a smart watch, a number of tech companies are also betting on a big future in wearable electronics. Products from Microsoft, Google, Samsung and LG said to be in the works along with Sony’s recently announced Sony SmartWatch 2 and the currently available options such as Pebble, MetaWatch, and I’m Watch.

We’ll have to see how the upcoming wearable devices stack up against one another once more details are revealed.

      About Google AdSense

Google AdSense is a program run by Google Inc. that allows publishers in the Google Network of content sites to serve automatic text, image, video, or interactive media adverts that are targeted to site content and audience. These adverts are administered, sorted, and maintained by Google, and they can generate revenue on either a per-click or per-impression basis. Google beta-tested a cost-per-actionservice, but discontinued it in October 2008 in favor of a DoubleClick offering (also owned by Google).[2] In Q1 2011, Google earned US $2.43 billion ($9.71 billion annualized), or 28% of total revenue, through Google AdSense.[3]

Google uses its Internet search technology to serve advertisements based on website content, the user's geographical location, and other factors. Those wanting to advertise with Google's targeted advertisement system may enroll through Google AdWords. AdSense has become a popular company in creating and placing banner advertisements on a website, because the advertisements are less intrusive than most banners, and the content of the advertisements is often relevant to the website.
Many websites use AdSense to monetize their content; it is the most popular advertising network.[4] AdSense has been particularly important for delivering advertising revenue to small websites that do not have the resources for developing advertising sales programs and sales people to generate revenue with. To fill a website with advertisements that are relevant to the topics discussed, webmasters place a brief HTML code on the websites' pages. Websites that are content-rich have been very successful with this advertising program, as noted in a number of publisher case studies on the AdSense website. AdSense publishers may only place three ad units per page.
Some webmasters put significant effort into maximizing their own AdSense income. They do this in three ways:
      1. They use a wide range of traffic-generating techniques, including but not limited to online advertising.
      2. They build valuable content on their websites that attracts AdSense advertisements, which pay out the most when they are clicked.
      3. They use text content on their websites that encourages visitors to click on advertisements. Note that Google prohibits webmasters from using phrases like "Click on my AdSense ads" to increase click rates. The phrases accepted are "Sponsored Links" and "Advertisements".
The source of all AdSense income is the AdWords program, which in turn has a complex pricing model based on a Vickrey second price auction. AdSense commands an advertiser to submit a sealed bid (i.e., a bid not observable by competitors). Additionally, for any given click received, advertisers only pay one bid increment above the second-highest bid. Google currently shares 68% of revenue generated by AdSense with content network partners, and 51% of revenue generated by AdSense with AdSense for Search partners.[5]

      History

Oingo, Inc., a privately held company located in Los Angeles, was started in 1998 by Gilad Elbaz and Adam Weissman. Oingo developed a proprietary search algorithm that was based on word meanings and built upon an underlying lexicon called WordNet, which was developed over the previous 15 years by researchers at Princeton University, led by George Miller.[6]
Oingo changed its name to Applied Semantics in 2001,[7] which was later acquired by Google in April 2003.[8]

Google launched its AdSense program in March 2003 and made it public in June of that year. Some advertisers complained that AdSense yielded worse results than AdWords, since it served ads that related contextually to the content on a web page and that content was less likely to be related to a user's commercial desires than search results. For example, someone browsing a blog dedicated to flowers was less likely to be interested in ordering flowers than someone searching for terms related to flowers. As a result, in 2004 Google allowed its advertisers to opt out of the AdSense network.[9]
By early 2005 AdSense accounted for an estimated 15 percent of Google's total revenues.[9]
In 2009, Google AdSense announced that it would now be offering new features, including the ability to "enable multiple networks to display ads".
In February 2010, Google AdSense started using search history in contextual matching to offer more relevant ads.[10]

      Beware of Scams and Scammers!

As you know there are many websites on the Internet which are basically built to promote money making programs. Not all of them are true programs. Most of them, as I experienced are fake. Of course many factors involved to spot a true and honest business from the fake ones. If you are new to such a niche and plan to join a home based making money program, try first to consult with someone who is familiar with online business or do some research on the Internet about the program otherwise you may lose money.
A good source to get information about scams and scammers is http://www.scambusters.org which helps people protect themselves from clever Internet scams, identity theft and urban legends since 1994.
So as you see I am so serious in this regard, that is the cost of most Internet home business ideas and you may be about to give your hard-earned dollars to some Internet scammers because he might have convinced you that he could tell you how to make a lot of money starting a new kind of home business on the Internet.
This is a very bad phenomenon taking place these days on the Internet as it spoils morality and confidence among people. It also prevents, or at least makes it so difficult, for honest people to do business on the Internet. Therefore, it would be a nice thing to reveal their inhumane tips and tricks to make some restriction for them and fight against them in any way.
Anyway, you must beware! Here is the deal. Almost most of making money online schemes are scams. If you want to join such a program, you will encounter with them. I have seen many of them. They show you scanned check photos, account reports, and daily revenues and promise you a lot of desirable things including but not limited to mansions, fast cars, pools, and leer jets claiming that you would get them in a very short time so easily!
Of course there are some programs which may lead you to get a good life but not in a short time and easily. In case of joining such programs, you need to work hard and take endeavors, i.e. No Pain, No Gain.
Anyway, they will tell you "Send me just the low one-time fee of $39, $49 (less or more), and I'll show you how you can make $100s every day working only 2 hours a day!"
However, you needn't be discouraged. You really can learn how to make money on the Internet but not with fake ones. My primary goal to build this website is to help you to find honest and effective home business ideas.
In this regard, the first step is to find an answer to this question: "Which online home business opportunities are scams and which ones are not?"
If you are like some people who are new to this business, you may not know and the reason is certainly because these webmasters are so slick with their sales pitches.
On the other hand, you may also know that people are making money and some great living every day from home with online businesses. You may probably even know some of these people personally. Being careful and doing some research, there is no reason why you can't create a profitable Internet business yourself and that is what you are searching for right now.
Maybe you have considered the main problem if you have been looking for an online home-based business that the scammers out there mess everything up for you. You might probably suspect that. And you are absolutely right about that. According to my experience more than 85% of them are basically designed to take your money and leave you with nothing.
The reason that 85% of them are scams is because online business scamming is terribly successful. All over the world, over 500,000 people who are just like you and me search the Internet every day for a way to make more money online. And there are hundreds of greedy or fraudulent webmasters out there ready to catch us with flashy websites and fool us to buy their fake or scam home-based business.
Being deceived many times by them during my endeavors to find a right way to earn some extra cash to afford necessary things in my life, I have been trying to do something about it since the last time I was ripped off.
For this reason I decided to help those who are in a situation as I was several years ago and who are about to start an online business hoping to find what they are looking for. I just help people to join such programs that I have already joined myself and tested them.
I have been doing researches since several years ago to find some applied methods to spot scam businesses. I have now the ability to spot them. I love God and I love what He created. Hence, I also love humanity. I am fully aware of the morals and the intelligence behind creation of the universe. I know the value of helping others. Anyway, I have helped literally many people to find just the right work at home solution for themselves. I know, if not completely but relatively, which business models work on the Internet and which ones do not.
By the way, I have been testing, trying, and evaluating online home business models for several years. I am telling you with total honesty, that at least 85% of get rich schemes are scams. At least! But you do not have to fall into their traps. Before you buy an online business opportunity, you owe it to yourself to find out the truth.
And the last point is crucial. It is obvious you don't have the time to waste. You could spend your money, for instance, $39 on that home business eBook, but you will never get back the time it took you to read it and figure out that it wasn't going to work. That is the time, for example, you could have spent with your family or doing a useful task or you could have invested in getting a program that would work. You don't have that time to waste.
      Good Luck
